Download speed, ping and jitter of your connection in a few seconds — right in your browser, no plugins, no sign-up.

How the speed test works

First the browser sends a few short requests to the server and computes ping (median) and jitter (spread between consecutive replies). Then for about seven seconds it downloads test data and measures speed as it arrives: the ruler shows the current speed, the final number is the average over the whole run. On a slow link the test ends by time, on a fast one by volume: it never downloads more than 50 MB. How to measure fairly and what the numbers mean is in how to test internet speed; how many megabits video, calls and games need is in what internet speed do I need.

Why the result differs from other tests

The test uses a single stream and the server is in Amsterdam: the farther you are, the higher the ping and the more TCP ramp-up matters. Speedtest and similar services pick the nearest server and download in several streams, so on links faster than 300 Mbps they will show more. For “can my line handle HD video and calls” our estimate is enough.

How to check whether the VPN cuts your speed

Run the test without VPN, then connect the VPN and run it again. A small drop and a higher ping are normal: traffic goes through an extra server. If speed falls several times over, try another server or protocol: where the network throttles UDP, VLESS over TCP helps. The fix-it checklist is in does a VPN slow down your internet.

Slower with VPN?

Measure with and without VPN. If it is noticeably slower with 404 VPN, write to support: we will pick a server and protocol for your network.
