What internet speed you need depends on what you do, not on what the plan says. One person watching HD video and taking calls is fine with 10–25 Mbps; a household with a 4K TV and several phones is comfortable from 50–100 Mbps; a gigabit line mostly pays off for people who download games and large files often. Ping often matters more than megabits: games and calls suffer from delay, not from a narrow pipe.

Your real speed, as opposed to the figure in the contract, takes ten seconds to check in the speed test. Below are the reference points per task, so you can tell whether it is enough.

Streaming video

Streaming is the most predictable consumer: each quality level has its own bitrate. Netflix's recommendations are 3 Mbps for HD (720p), 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K. YouTube's help pages list about 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. Players adapt quality to the line: if the speed fluctuates, the picture periodically drops to 480p, which you notice as a soft, blurry image.

A practical rule: one 4K TV needs 25 Mbps with some headroom, two need 50. If video buffers on a faster plan, the problem is usually the Wi-Fi between the router and the TV rather than the line.

Video calls

Calls need little bandwidth but are sensitive to ping and jitter. According to Zoom, a group call in 1080p needs about 3–4 Mbps in each direction, and ordinary 720p a little over one megabit. Stability matters far more: Microsoft's network requirements for Teams treat latency up to 100 ms and jitter up to 30 ms as acceptable. Stuttering voice and a crumbling picture on a "fast" plan almost always mean high jitter, usually caused by Wi-Fi or a saturated line.

Watch the upload speed too: many home plans upload several times slower than they download, and a call sends your video upstream.

Online gaming

Games barely use bandwidth; the exchange with the server fits into a few megabits. Ping decides everything: up to 50 ms is comfortable in any genre, up to 100 ms is tolerable, above that the delay is obvious in shooters and fighting games. Jitter and packet loss show up as teleporting and rollbacks.

Downloading the games themselves is a different story. A modern title weighs 50–100 GB; at 100 Mbps, 50 GB takes about 70 minutes, at 500 Mbps under 15. If you download often, that is what a fast plan is for.

Work, cloud and downloads

Email, messengers and websites are happy with anything above 5 Mbps; the bottleneck there is ping, because a page consists of dozens of small requests. Cloud drives and backups, on the other hand, move large volumes and run into the upload speed: syncing a photo folder on an asymmetric plan can take hours.

Converting megabits into time is simple: divide the file size in megabytes by the speed in megabits divided by eight. A 1 GB file at 100 Mbps takes about 80 seconds.

Several devices

Consumers add up. An evening in a family of four: 4K on the TV (20 Mbps), a call for one person (4), video on a phone for another (5), an update on a laptop (whatever is left) is already 30 Mbps of constant load plus everything the update grabs. A 100 Mbps plan copes, 50 is borderline, on 25 the video starts lowering its quality.

Remember Wi-Fi as well: the router shares the air between all devices, and an old access point can deliver less in total than arrives over the cable.

How to find out your speed

Open the speed test, close background downloads and measure two or three times, ideally over cable and over Wi-Fi separately. Compare with the reference points above. If the speed is enough but video still stalls, look at ping and jitter and at how Wi-Fi behaves next to the router and in the far room. Speed with a VPN

A VPN adds encryption and an extra hop, so some speed is lost and ping goes up. For video and calls this is usually invisible if the server is nearby and the protocol is modern.   • Video: 5 Mbps for Full HD, 15–20 for 4K according to Netflix and YouTube.
  • Calls: 3–4 Mbps each way; what matters is ping under 100 ms and jitter under 30 ms.
  • Games: little bandwidth, ping under 50 ms; a fast plan is for downloading the games themselves.
  • Add up the consumers and leave headroom for Wi-Fi.
