With a travel eSIM in China you do not need a VPN to reach your usual apps, as long as the eSIM is the line your phone uses for data. A travel eSIM is a foreign carrier's profile visiting China as a guest; your traffic exits to the internet in that carrier's country, and Chinese filtering never sees it. Instagram, WhatsApp, Google Maps and Gmail work the way they do at home, with more latency.
That answer stops being true in four situations, and most travelers hit at least one of them within a day: the moment the phone is on any other connection, the laptop, privacy on the network you are using, and the case where the "eSIM" is actually from a Chinese carrier. Below: each case, whether a VPN even works over an eSIM, and the setup that covers all of it without thinking about it every morning.
Why the eSIM alone is enough for your apps
On a roaming line, the Chinese tower only provides the radio signal. The data is handed to your home carrier under the roaming agreement and reaches the public internet abroad. To the national gateways this is carrier-to-carrier transit, not a user session. Nothing on the phone is doing anything clever; it is routing. The important word in that paragraph is line. The eSIM protects exactly one thing: the phone's mobile data, while that eSIM is selected for data. Everything else is where the cases begin.
Case 1: the moment you leave the eSIM
Hotel Wi-Fi, café Wi-Fi, the airport network, a local SIM you bought for cheap data, or simply the phone joining a saved Wi-Fi on its own: the instant the phone is on a Chinese connection, the traffic exits in China and the filter applies. The apps that worked a minute ago sit on a loading screen, and nothing on the eSIM side has changed.
Most people do not notice the switch. The phone prefers Wi-Fi over mobile data, so a hotel network you joined once will take over every time you walk into the lobby. Either keep Wi-Fi off, or accept that on Wi-Fi you are on Chinese internet and use a VPN there.
Case 2: the laptop
The eSIM lives in the phone. A laptop on hotel Wi-Fi is on Chinese internet with no eSIM to help it. Two ways out: share the phone's eSIM connection as a hotspot, which works but spends the eSIM's data on everything the laptop does, or put a VPN on the laptop and use the hotel Wi-Fi. Most people who work on the trip end up with both: the hotspot for a quick check, the VPN for the working day. Case 3: privacy on any network
A travel eSIM solves reachability, not privacy. The eSIM carrier sees the domains you connect to, the same way your carrier does at home, and websites see your address, just a foreign one. If you would rather the network you are on not see your browsing, that is a VPN's job, and it is the same job on the eSIM as anywhere else. Case 4: the eSIM is Chinese
"eSIM for China" is sold by two very different kinds of provider. A foreign carrier's profile, usually based in Hong Kong, Singapore or Europe, is the travel eSIM this article is about. An eSIM issued by China Mobile or China Unicom is a local SIM in digital form: it exits in China and is filtered like any local connection, and with it you need a VPN exactly as you would with a plastic local SIM. If a listing says your usual apps work without a VPN, it is almost certainly a foreign profile. Does a VPN work over a travel eSIM?
Yes, and more reliably than over local networks. The tunnel is established from abroad, where nothing is inspecting it for the shape of its handshake, so protocols that struggle on hotel Wi-Fi connect normally on the eSIM. The cost is latency: your traffic already detours through the eSIM carrier's home network, and a VPN adds a second hop to its server. For messaging and maps this is invisible; for video calls it can be the difference between fine and choppy.
So the practical rule: on the eSIM, run the VPN when you want privacy, and leave it off when you only want your apps and the best speed. The setup that covers all four cases
- Travel eSIM installed and tested before departure, set as the data line, with data roaming enabled for it.
- A VPN installed and signed in at home, with the connection verified on What Is My IP and a second key or protocol saved as backup. VPN websites and app stores are usually unreachable from Chinese networks, so nothing can be added later.
- Wi-Fi auto-join off for networks you do not trust, so the phone does not silently move you onto Chinese internet in the lobby.
- Hotspot tested once at home, so that the laptop has a known path on the first evening.
- Home-carrier roaming known and switched off by default, kept as the emergency line for the day when both the eSIM and the VPN misbehave.
What none of this changes
WeChat and Alipay run on any connection and you will need them regardless. Payments, taxis, trains and deliveries live inside them. Rules on unapproved international connections exist in China and enforcement has historically focused on people selling access rather than on travelers; this is not legal advice, and the decision is yours.
