You need a VPN when traveling if you will use hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi for anything that matters, if you want your bank and email to see you as usual instead of flagging a login from a new country, or if you will be somewhere that watches network traffic more closely than home. You do not need one to get cheaper flights, and it will not fix a slow hotel connection. Here is the honest version, sorted by what actually happens on a trip.
Where a VPN clearly helps
Shared Wi-Fi. Hotel and airport networks are shared with hundreds of strangers and run by people you have never met. The content of HTTPS sites is safe, but the list of sites you visit, your DNS queries and any app that talks in plain text are visible on the network. A VPN moves all of that into an encrypted tunnel, so the network sees one connection to one server and nothing else. Banking and email from abroad. Fraud systems watch for logins from unexpected countries. A card that works at home can get frozen after two purchases from a new location, and email providers send "unusual sign-in" alerts and lock accounts. Connecting to a VPN server in your home country before you log in makes your session look normal. This is the single most practical use of a VPN on a trip.
Working remotely. If your employer expects you to appear from a particular country, or your work tools behave differently abroad, a home-country server keeps everything as it was.
Networks that inspect traffic. Some countries, corporate networks and campuses filter or inspect connections. A tunnel that looks like ordinary HTTPS, which is what the VLESS protocol is designed to do, keeps your traffic private on those networks in a way that older protocols often cannot.
Where a VPN does not help
Cheaper flights and hotels. The idea that changing your apparent country reliably lowers prices is mostly a myth. Prices vary by currency, by the airline's regional site and by the time you look, not by an IP address alone. Occasionally you will find a difference; often you will find a different currency and the same price. Do not choose a VPN for this.
A slow hotel connection. A VPN adds a small overhead. If the hotel Wi-Fi is bad, it will be equally bad through the tunnel. What a VPN can do is stop a hotel network from treating some of your traffic worse than the rest, because inside the tunnel it all looks the same.
Phishing and malware. A tunnel encrypts traffic; it does not judge it. A fake booking site is just as fake through a VPN.
Captive portals. The page where you accept the hotel's terms loads before the VPN can connect. Connect to the Wi-Fi, get through the portal, then turn the VPN on.
Mobile data, eSIM, or Wi-Fi?
Mobile data is safer than shared Wi-Fi: the carrier link is encrypted and other subscribers cannot see your traffic. If roaming is affordable or you have a travel eSIM, use mobile data for banking and keep Wi-Fi for large downloads. The VPN still matters on mobile data for one reason: a foreign carrier is a stranger too, and your home-country server keeps your accounts from panicking.
With an eSIM from a travel provider, your traffic often exits in a third country, so services may think you are somewhere you are not. A VPN server in a country of your choosing makes that predictable.
Countries where VPNs are restricted
In some places VPN use is regulated, throttled or only allowed through licensed providers. The rules change, and the details differ by country, so check current guidance for your destination before you travel and respect local law. Two practical points hold everywhere: install and test the app before departure, because app stores and download sites may be unreachable on arrival, and keep the app up to date, since protocols that blend in with normal traffic work better on networks that filter.
Before you leave: a checklist
- Install the VPN app on the phone and laptop, sign in, and connect once at home to confirm it works.
- Add a home-country server to favorites. That is the one you will use for banking and email.
- Turn on the kill switch, so a dropped tunnel on hotel Wi-Fi does not silently expose you.
- Turn on auto-connect for untrusted Wi-Fi if the app has it.
- Save the app's login and your password manager offline; you may need them without network access.
- Note the nearest server locations for your destination on the server list; a close server keeps latency low for everyday browsing.
- On arrival, connect to Wi-Fi, clear the captive portal, turn on the VPN, then open What Is My IP to confirm the tunnel is up.
While you are there
Use the home-country server for anything tied to your identity: bank, email, work.
