Who owns this IP address

An IP address tells you the country, roughly the city, the provider and the autonomous system number — that is, whose network it is. It holds no name, no street address and no phone number: this is data about a network, not about a person.

How to use it

Your own addressLeave the field empty and press “My address” — you will see the IP that sites see on your connection.
Someone else’s addressPaste an address from your logs, an email or a sign-in alert. Both IPv4 and IPv6 work.

What the result means

Provider and ASN — the most useful field. If it names a hosting company or a cloud (Amazon, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, OVH), there is almost certainly a server behind the address rather than a person: that is what bots, scanners and other people’s VPNs look like. A home or mobile operator means a live connection, but it will not tell you which subscriber.

Country and city — with a caveat: the city comes from a database that ties the range to a provider node. An error of a hundred kilometres is normal; on mobile internet it can be more.

Type — IPv4 or IPv6. If your connection has working IPv6, sites see that one, and with a VPN switched on it is a common source of leaks of your real address.

[01] $ Can an IP tell you who exactly was using it?
> No. The provider knows who held the address at that moment, but discloses it only on an official request. All that is visible from outside is the network and its owner, and hundreds of subscribers can sit behind a single home-provider address at once.

> Geolocation databases tie an address not to a house but to the provider node it was issued through. That node can stand in the next town, or in the regional capital. On mobile internet the error is usually larger still.

> An autonomous system number identifies the network that announces this range of addresses to the internet. It shows whose address it really is: a home provider, a mobile operator, a hosting company or a cloud. An address from a data centre almost certainly belongs to a server rather than a person.

> No. The request goes from your browser straight to the open ipwho.is service, bypassing our servers: we know neither the addresses you type nor the answers.
